Death Cafes
Death Cafes are held at various venues across the borough.

The next is at Selsdon Library on June 1 from 5-6.30pm. 

There are death cafes held in New Addington at The Octagon every fourth Friday of the month. Details here.

Dog Awareness Event
An event run by the Croydon Council Dog Warden and The Dogs Trust at Duppas Hill Rec from 11am to 3pm. On June 1. For more details, click here

The low-cost neutering scheme has been extended and will run throughout 2018.

 

Norbury Green RA coffee mornings

These run the first Saturday of each month in Norbury Library.  The next is this Saturday.

 

 

 

Norbury Brook Alliance Summer Spruce Up

The theme this year is ‘By the Sea. Sunday 3 June from noon to 4pm

David Lean Screenings
It’s always worth booking early as screening are very popular. View the June screenings here.  The July screenings will go on sale on 7 June.

 

 

Friends of Thornton Heath Rec meeting 
A meeting to relaunch the friends group will be held on 7 June from 7-8.30pm and everyone is welcome. Details here.

 

City Commons events
A variety of events are run. The next events are a flower walk on Coulsdon Common on June 3,  a  flower and butterfly walk on Riddlesdown Common on 9 June, a bat walk on Riddlesdown Common on 15 June in the evening and a flower walk on Farthing Downs on June 16.

 

Croydon Environmental Fair
This is being held on Saturday 9 June in Wandle Park from 10am to 5pm. Details here.

 

 

 

Carers Week
This will run from 11-17 June.  The Carers Support Centre is running a wide range of events. See details here.

 

 

Policing in Croydon
Croydon Safer Neighbourhoods Board meeting
The next meeting is on Thursday 14 June.  The Board is funded by the Mayor’s office for Policing and Crime, and aims to give the borough’s residents a voice on safety and policing issues and to hold the police and their partners to account.

This meeting is the AGM and it will be held in the Council Chamber in Croydon Town Hall at 6.30pm. Click here for details. 

Local policing team newsletters
Anyone can sign up to receive these newsletters and occasional important updates from their local policing team. Newsletters also contain details of ward panel meetings.  Local policing teams are keen to hear from residents and business owners/workers on their priorities and concerns for the ward.

CCC post all local policing team ward newsletters on the website, but in order to avoid delay and to ensure that people receive important updates as soon as they are released, do sign up directly with the local policing team to get the information as soon as it is released.

SE Cancer Help Centre Fashion Show
This fundraiser is being run in Purley on Saturday 16 June.  Doors open at 2.30 to 3pm.  Tickets are £10 and on sale now. Details here

The last market before the Autumn runs at All Saints in Sanderstead on June 16. Details here

 

 

 

Croydon Festival of Peace

A week of activities at different venues involving various groups in Croydon.

Launch – Saturday 16 June, Summer of Love, Wandle Park – Everyone is invited to come and learn the Anthem with Ecclesbourne School and LMP from 3-4pm.  During the week – The Anthem will be distributed throughout schools and individuals and groups are invited to create their own versions of it.

Finale – Saturday 23 June within the Festival of Peace and Wellbeing at Park Hill Park – Finale performance from 3-4pm with LMP, local brass groups and a dance choreographed by Anusha Subramanyam performed by local multicultural dance groups. See details in the notes of our January meeting.

Faiths Together in Croydon Bike Ride and Picnic – Sunday 24 June
Join the bike ride, with three different starting points, or go along to the picnic at the end of the ride in Park Hill Park from 2pm.  All welcome.

Janet Smith has launched Croydon Arts Show.  Check it out for podcasts of interviews, reviews, listings of events and more. 

 

Purley Food Hub
Purley Food Hub serves people across Croydon. They are always looking for donations to support their work in order to deal with increasing demand. A list of items sought each month is produced.  Find the list for June here.

 

 

 

 

Black History Month

 

This year’s theme is ‘Heroes to Heritage’. The month will be launched on October 2 at Tomorrow Café at 6pm, followed by a month of varied activities.

 

 

 

SNARL and the cat killer

The UK cat killer is still active.

Please help South Norwood Animal Rescue and Liberty (SNARL) who are working with the police to catch the person or persons responsible and alert others so they can keep their pets safe

To be held at The Brit School on 21 July 2018 and open to Croydon youth 11-24 years of age.  There are limited places so booking is essential.

Updates from previous meetings

The meeting on Rubbish – Refuse, Recycling and Flytipping generated a number of questions and points but no response has been received to these via the agreed process. Cllr Yvette Hopley agreed to take this up so residents received a response.

The notes of the meeting with Home-Start Croydon are being prepared and should be available shortly.

Holocaust Memorial Ceremony – Friday 26 January

The second CR7 Market this Saturday, 27 January – 12 to 6pm

12 – 6pm at Ambassador House, opposite Thornton Heath Railway Station.

Light Festival at Trumble Gardens, Thornton Heath, 4-9pm

This is a free event but tickets have SOLD OUT. Tickets may be available on the gates.

Both events are listed, along with other news and events, in the Thornton Heath Chronicle. Copies were made available at the meeting.

Croydon’s branch of  Amnesty International are holding a candlelit vigil and exhibition – 25 January to 2 February 2018

The ‘I Welcome’ exhibition will run from 25 January in the Central Library atrium to highlight the stories of refugees, past and present, For details and to book a free place, see Eventbrite.

There will be a candlelit vigil from 4.30-5pm outside the library on 27 January to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day – all are welcome to attend.

Norbury Brook meeting – 1 February
All welcome to this meeting. Norbury Brook runs from Thornton Heath on to Norbury so if you live in the area, why not go along to find out more?

Home-Start Croydon volunteer training –  starting on Weds, 7 February for 8 sessions during the day.
Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer for the charity should get in touch with Home-Start Croydon asap!

Gala Night – 10 February at 7.30pm at St John’s Church Hall, Upper Norwood
An event in aid of Croydon Association for Pastoral Care in Mental Health.

Younger Generation Theatre Group auditions

A Croydon-based theatre group which usually performs at the Fairfield Halls. Currently performing at the Harlequin in Redhill during the refurbishment of the Fairfield Halls. Calling for 9-18-year-olds to audition for the next show. Auditions will be held in Purley in February and March.

The Inspector’s report on the Croydon Local Plan has been published, with the main modifications noted.  This can be viewed here.

 

SNARL and the cat killer

All were asked to keep spreading the word and to follow the advice given to keep pets safe. Flyers were also available at the meeting to take away.

SNARL are looking for people willing to help leaflet areas in Croydon.

 Purley Food Hub serves Croydon and the organisation is always looking for donations to support their work. A list of items sought each month is produced.

The Refugee Centre in West Croydon also seeks donations and CCC are currently waiting to receive an updated leaflet.

The cat killer – description of the person thought to be linked to the case

 

An important update from SNARL

The suspect is a white male with dark brown hair, in his forties, with a pock marked or scarred face. He has no discernible accent.

He has been seen at a number of locations with variously, a head lamp, a torch, a backpack and a large man bag, approaching cats with food and/or toys and making “kissing noises”.

If seen approaching animals, or looking in people’s gardens or under vehicles, please dial 999 and report under Operation Takahe and then call Tony & Boudicca of SNARL on 07961 030064 or 07957 830490.

If you find a mutilated animal or body parts, please dial 101 and report under Operation Takahe and then also call Boudicca and Tony.
