Croydon Saffron Central update, including how to get involved and Croydon Pridefest

Croydon Saffron Central is being entered again in the RHS London In Bloom ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood Awards’.

Last year Saffron Central received a Level 4 Award of ‘Thriving’ with 79%!  It was judged again on 30th June 2017!

The rationale for the Hearts and Rainbows theme is that this year sees not only the 50th Anniversary of ‘The Summer of Love’ but that the site will also be next door to Croydon PrideFest 2017 on the 15 July 2017. What better way could the community & Croydon Saffron Central embrace this than by showing some love and creating a giant rainbow flag?

The idea is simple, from left to right (facing St Georges House) each bed will house – Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue & Violet flowering plants.

Here’s one the founder of Saffron Central, Ally McKinlay, prepared earlier.

Thursday 13th July – Private view – 6pm – 8pm

A chance to see the ‘Chasing Rainbows’ space before the Pridefest & the very last opportunity to add a plant or art installation (ideally already potted as this is a celebration & not a work day!

Saturday 15th July – Pridefest – 11am – 1pm

Saffron Central has been advised to open and close early as the party will no doubt gather momentum over the day.

Crocus Corms – If people would like to take some away they are most welcome as they are in a dormant state at the moment.  We have lots of paper bags from the Croydon Heritage Festival!!!

What else can you do to help?

Creative installations

To boost the colours of the beds, creative installations will be added in the same colour for each bed.  Let your imagination run wild and please ask all your creative contacts to go along and get involved – whether it be flags, streamers or simply something showing your LOVE for Croydon & it’s community.

When it’s all put together the organisers plan to send a drone up to photograph what will surely be Croydon’s largest ever Rainbow Flag!

Installations will need to be weather proof – think rain, sun, wind!

Pots

Larger pots – that’s anything larger than 10cm, are also welcome. These will be used to pot on smaller donations.

Plans for THIS SATURDAY – 10:30am – 4:30pm

– The Good Gym will be kicking preparations off by helping to clear the lanes of crocuses and then line them ready to receive donated plants.  They will be there from 11am until noon so come and meet them to help & learn more about their great work.

– The lavender, oregano, marjoram & woad from last year is needing a little bit of TLC, some watering,  repotting, & weeding etc.

– There are seeds to plant to help with the rainbow flag &  hopefully also some bedding plants to repot.

– There will be paints for decorative work under the “Hearts & Rainbows” theme.

PLEASE BRING GLOVES & TROWELS IF POSSIBLE!!

What else can you do to help?

Plant/Seed Donations These are most welcome and ideally with plants that will flower red, orange, yellow, green, blue & violet.

Suggestions – If you have suggestions of good plants to invest in please let Ally know as there is a budget and it is hoped that more donations to support this project will come in as word gets around this community project that should result in a wonderful spectacle for the community to enjoy.

Arts  Ally is very keen for people to be creative in the space or to bring creations to the space.  There’s an idea to have some sessions for artists to group together & sketch/paint etc. so let me know if that’s of interest or if you can help with co-ordination of such an event.

Ally says,

I do hope you’re able to come down on Saturday but will be adding a number of additional sessions, including some Tuesday & Thursday evenings soon.”
