Message from the new ward panel Chair – Purley and Woodcote

MESSAGE FROM TONY SMITH, NEW CHAIRMAN, PURLEY & WOODCOTE SNT WARD PANEL

“…I am anxious to encourage members of the local community – and particularly representatives of local groups such as churches schools and business – to attend the ward panel meetings and let their voices be heard.”

I am very pleased to announce that I was elected to become ward panel chair for the Purley & Woodcote SNT area, at our last meeting on 10 October, 2018.

First and foremost, I would like to pay tribute to my predecessor Mr Donald Speakman, who chaired the ward panel for a great many years before me. Donald has decided to retire as chairman, but I am pleased to say he will remain as a community member of the panel in future; and I know his wisdom and experience will be very useful to us.

By way of introduction, my name is Tony Smith and I moved to the Woodcote Park Estate in February 2017 from South Sutton. I have some experience of community policing in Sutton, having acted as ward co-ordinator for Neighbourhood Watch there for 3 years and as chair of the Sutton South SNT ward panel for 2 years. I retired from government service after 40 years in 2013 and now run my own private business from home. I am married with 2 teenage boys at Sutton Grammar School.

I have worked in law enforcement myself in the past and I know just how important community policing is. Indeed, successive cuts in police funding in recent years has meant that is it even more important that the community provide support and guidance to our local police teams, and help them to prioritise their scarce resources to those areas that will be of maximum benefit to the community. We are fortunate to live in a low crime area, but we cannot afford to be complacent; and we need to understand what the community can do to help the police in undertaking a difficult and sensitive role in an increasingly complex environment.

With this is mind I am anxious to encourage members of the local community – and particularly representatives of local groups such as churches schools and business – to attend the ward panel meetings and let their voices be heard. Meetings are only held every 3 months so this should not be a great drain on your time; and the benefits may be considerable.

Our next meeting will be held at Purley Fire Station, 128 Brighton Road, Purley CR8 4DB at 7 pm on 9 January 2019 – hope to see you there.

Tony Smith
Chairman
Purley and Woodcote SNT ward panel
