Book a place for the Lichen Identification Walkshop – 12 Sept 2017, part of Wandle Fortnight

Carrying out a lichen survey is a fun and engaging activity to explore and understand more about your local area. It is suitable for all age groups, including families.

Lichens are formed from a symbiotic relationship between fungus and algae, and grow everywhere! There are many different types of lichens and some are sensitive to levels of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) in the air, therefore acting as bio-indicators of pollution levels.

London Sustainability Exchange (LSx) will run this event and will also bring their Particulate Matter monitor and take readings with that along the way.  It will begin and end with short presentations and discussions about pollution.

This event is part of Wandle Fortnight, with a host of events running from 9 to 24 September 2017.

Rough timings for the walkshop are as follows:

18:00 Meet up at the bandstand in Wandle Park

18:10 Brief introduction to pollution and lichens

18:30 Walking around to find lichen. The walk will start in Wandle Park and head towards Croydon town centre in order to spot lichen and to gauge differing levels of pollution.

19:15 Arrive back at Bandstand and discuss results

19:30 Close

Anyone under the age of 16 will need to be accompanied by a responsible adult.
