Croydon’s Patient Participation Groups (PPGs)

What’s a PPG? It stands for Patient Participation Group.

PATIENTS who are
ACTIVE in taking
RESPONSIBILITY for their health and work as a
TEAM with their practice to ensure that patients are well
INFORMED about health matters which affect the
COMMUNITY,
INDIVIDUAL patients and the
PRACTICE, to raise
AWARENESS of wider issues in the NHS, including the use of
TECHNOLOGY. PPGs are
INVOLVED and can have influence in improving the quality of care.
OBJECTIVES are to improve the patient experience in primary care in the
NHS

Not every GP Practice has a group but there are quite a few that do and they will be very pleased to meet you, for you to find out what they do and to get involved.

The role of the PPG includes:

  • being a critical friend to the practice
  • ongoing communication with the patient population
  • carrying out research into the views of those who use the practice
  • advising the practice on the patient perspective and providing insight into the responsiveness and quality of services
  • encouraging patients to take greater responsibility for their own and their family’s health
  • organising health promotion events and improving health literacy

One thing a PPG is not is a vehicle for personal complaints.

What support is there for the PPG?

There is a PPG network in Croydon where PPG committee members can share experiences and good practice by networking with other PPGs.

NAPP is a national association that promotes and supports patient participation in primary care.  PPGs can take up membership to receive advice and support.

Get involved!
