RUBBISH – Refuse, Recycling and fly-tipping in Croydon – 12 Feb 2014

RUBBISH! Everyone is talking about refuse, recycling and fly tipping in Croydon.

This meeting was organised as a result of the interest and concern shown on the subject from across the borough of Croydon at our Public Meeting in November and anyone is welcome to attend.

Come and hear the latest from Anthony Brooks, Croydon Council’s Director of Environment, and take the opportunity to ask a question or make comment directly to the council officer responsible.

The meeting is being held at the Community Space in Bernard Weatherill House at 8 Mint Walk CROYDON CR0 1EA

The following comment, with photos, has been emailed to us:

“As promised, here are the pictures of some of the fly tips in Croydon. The most outrageous being the Birchanger Road, although they are all outrageous really.

This issue will not go away if we ignore it, but can get much worse if nothing is done. We are governed by the Environment Agency and by local authorities.

The meeting on 12th Feb is a great start to combat this anti social behaviour. Hopefully there will be a good turn out and the message gets across that its unacceptable and illegal. Thank you for your help in raising this issue. You’ve been a breath of fresh air.

Fly tipping breeds contempt for an area and becomes a habit. You’ll notice as quick as the council clear it, rogues just replace the rubbish. Its costly to the council, its dangerous, illegal and disrespectful to the local community. Knife crime has been making the local news. I’m not suggesting the two issues are linked but with the anti social aura fly tipping creates, a lack of pride and passion for community spirit is being spread. Hopefully these crimes stop and Croydon can be enjoyed by everyone, young or old, whatever race, religion or sex. Education starts at home and awareness is a start.

The next public meeting is on Tuesday, 14th January in Shirley  This is open to anyone with an interest in Croydon and not limited to the area where the meeting is held, as are all our public meetings. We are pleased to see that the bookings so far reflect interest from different parts of the borough.

There is no agenda for this meeting. It is an open meeting where anything can be discussed or raised and the range of topics covered will be led by those attending. We are an apolitical organisation and for that reason we will not permit any political promotion or party political discussion.

If you haven’t booked a place yet, please do. It is free to attend. We are using Eventbrite – an online booking system – to manage bookings. You need only provide your name and email details but can leave your phone number and other details if you wish. You can now also book for others by adding their name to your booking, allowing groups to book together and those online to  book for others without online access.

The committee will hold your details securely and they will not be disclosed to any external sources without consent.

Details of two further meetings in February will be listed on Eventbrite shortly . One is to be held at Bernard Weatherill House  on the 12th on the subject of Rubbish – refuse, recycling and fly tipping, and a further public meeting will be held on the 27th in Old Coulsdon.
